Check It Out!

lovepeoplelovebooks.jpgFor lovers of books and bookstores, there is a new blog in town! Two of Village Books' very own customers have started www.bookstorepeople.com to muse and amuse us. Claire LaZebnik and Kim Allen-Niesen share not only a friendship but a fierce passion for books, reading and independent bookstores. They write, "The primary reason for the blog is to highlight independent bookstores in the hope that it will encourage people to visit them and buy books from them.  We'll also write about books, literary places and adventures, and people who are passionate about the reading world." Amen to that. There's even a specific shout out to Village Books. Thank you and right back at you bookstorepeople! You're our kind of folk.

A Gardener's Delight

Birds are searching for homes, apricots are forming on trees, and roses are showing us their plumage.... Spring must be here!  We have some lovely books at the store to celebrate the rebirth such as The Nature Garden Conservancy's Open Days Directory:  The 2008 Guide to Visiting America's Gardens. This is a gem of a little book bringing you the dates, times and addresses of private gardens that open their doors once a year throughout the country.  Los Angeles Open Days are Sunday April 27, and Saturday May 10 for instance. Going to take your graduate to college in Boston August? Well, why not visit "Ellen Cool's Garden" on 19 Circle Street in Marblehead?!  "We believe that the best way to learn about gardens and to appreciate them is to simply spend more time in them."

May We Recommend...??

Anyone who has visited Village Books knows that the shelves are replete with not only the latest best-sellers, but also with lesser known but equally as good (and sometimes better!) works of both fiction and non-fiction. With such a surfeit of choices how can you choose what to read, what to select as a gift, what to recommend to your book club? Many of our customers rely on the Staff Reviews, slips of paper sticking out of a multitude of books like a friendly finger beckoning you over, "Psst! Choose me!" Of course we're all avid readers and our tastes run the gamut, so if you can't make it into the store to see what we're reading (and recommending!), click here to see our staff's friendly faces and what they're reading these days. (You can also just click on "Our Staff and Their Picks" from the menu at left.) And check back regularly as our lists change every week!!

More Than a Bookstore

In addition to providing friendly service to meet all your book-buying needs, some of the staff here at Village Books periodically bake homemade treats from the many cookbooks we sell to make any visit to Village Books, well, that much sweeter! Click on "Inside Village Books" from the menu at left to read about some of those offerings...and stop by sometime to taste for yourself!

Maile Meloy
My stepmother had been driving across the country, listening to NPR, and she heard about a book she wanted to read. She couldn’t remember what state she’d been in, or what show she’d been listening to. She couldn’t remember the title of t...
