Malibu Chapter
Malibu Chapter is a vibrant group of eight women who are all
passionately love to read and discuss literature. We have met once a
month for more than ten years now. Each month, one member chooses the
book, leads the discussion, and provides food and drink to match the
book if possible. We read one classic a year, and hold a pot luck
couples' book club once a year.
In February we read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. For some of us it was an opportunity to reread this moving classic, for others it was a discovery of joy. We feasted on turkey and rye bread, nuts and cheese and berry pie, appreciating the food while discussing the hungry hard life of strong Francie Nolan, and her poor immigrant family around 1915. We were all amazed at the power of a nickel back then!
Other books we have read include March by Gerladine Brooks and Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. Next month we will read The Master by Colm Toibin.
