Some Danger Involved
Some Danger Involved by Will Thomas
My co-worker Barbara left this Victorian crime novel in my box recently thinking I might enjoy it and boy did I ever! In this book we are introduced to a Sherlock and Holmes type pair who call themselves private enquiry agents hired by a Jewish 'don' in London to discover the murderer of a young Jewish scholar by crucification. Set in a time when London was teeming with Jews fleeing the pograms of eastern europe, the fear amongst the community is that England, where they have sought refuge, will be the next place to persecute them.
Mrs. Mike
Mrs. Mike by Benedict and Nancy Freedman
One of the best jobs here at the shoppe is unpacking the multitude of boxes that are delivered here weekly and discovering little gems like Mrs. Mike that a customer had special ordered. Naturally the subtitle:The Classic Saga of Love and Courage in the Canadian Wilderness appealed to me having grown up in the tundra as I did. Sixteen year old Katherine Mary O'Fallon travels from Boston to Calgary during one of the coldest, snowiest winters in Canada early in the 20th century to live with an Uncle in an effort to cure her pleurisy. Not long after arriving on his ranch, she meets and falls in love with a well-respected sergeant in the Canadian Mounted Police (a 'Mounty' as they are affectionately called).
Beginner's Greek
Beginner's Greek by James Collins
I adore well written romantic comedies and was delighted when this little concoction showed up at the shop recently. It reminds me a bit of The Calligrapher by the English writer Edward Doux because the writer is male, even though our hero in Beginner's Greek is American and generally a more likeable fellow. Peter Russell, a thirty-something, up and coming New York executive and self professed romantic, is on a flight to Los Angeles daydreaming about the prospect of the love of his life sitting next to him during the boarding process (haven't we ALL had those sorts of dreams??). His dream comes true when a beautiful young woman named Holly takes her seat next to him clutching a tattered copy of The Magic Mountain which she is reading for pleasure and which happens to be one of his all time favorite novels.
